Bring outdoor living closer to the garden

Ground-level, platform & floating decks

A low deck can create a natural transition from your house to the garden. “Ground-level” describes its height, while “floating” generally describes a detached layout. The terms do not establish how the deck should be supported.

01

Choose the relationship to the house

A low platform may be attached or freestanding. Decide whether it starts at a doorway, sits apart as a garden destination, or connects different outdoor areas. The support design still needs to suit the ground and selected materials.

02

Give water and airflow a way through

Low clearance makes ventilation, debris access and drainage especially worth discussing. Ask the installer about the material’s clearance requirements and how maintenance will reach the space below.

03

Keep access and approval in the plan

Consider transitions at doors, step placement and the route to the yard. A low deck is not automatically exempt from all approvals. Confirm the requirements for the actual address and design before construction.

Questions worth asking

Does floating mean it rests directly on dirt?

No. The support and foundations must be appropriate to the design and site.

Is every low deck permit-free?

No. Confirm the jurisdiction’s requirements for the actual attachment, size, height and use.
