Choose the right relationship to your home

Attached, freestanding & detached garden decks

The location of a deck and the way it is supported are related, but different. A deck can sit beside a house while using an independent support structure, or connect structurally to the building when properly designed.

01

Attached decks

A deck structurally connected to the home needs a suitable connection and water-management detail. Ask who will assess the existing building and what happens if concealed damage is found during replacement.

02

Freestanding decks

Independent support can be appropriate for some situations, but it does not remove the need for foundations, lateral stability and a designed relationship to the building. Do not choose it solely as a presumed way to avoid permits.

03

Detached garden destinations

A separate garden deck can create a quiet seating area or a destination away from the back door. Consider the access path, privacy, sun and shade, and how garden maintenance will reach its edges.

Questions worth asking

Is freestanding the same as ground-level?

No. Freestanding describes support; ground-level describes relative height.

Does a detached deck need approval?

It may. Confirm the requirements for its size, height, position and use with the authority for the property.
