A different way to build an outdoor room

Paver, porcelain tile & concrete deck surfaces

Not every outdoor platform uses deck boards. Porcelain pavers, concrete pavers and engineered concrete terraces expand the choices, particularly for roof terraces and specialized elevated assemblies.

01

Ground-supported patio or elevated deck?

A patio supported by the ground is a different project from pavers carried above a structure. Name the assembly clearly so the right contractor and design professionals are involved. Do not put heavy paving on an existing wood deck without an approved design.

02

Pedestal and protected-roof systems

Some elevated terraces use pavers supported above a membrane. Their design needs to coordinate roof loading, drainage, wind considerations, access and edge containment. The walking surface and waterproof layer do different jobs.

03

Concrete and tile need their own details

A concrete structural deck, tiled balcony and garden patio are not interchangeable scopes. Ask who owns the structural design and waterproofing responsibility, and request suitable details for the exact assembly and exposure.

Questions worth asking

Can I tile over existing deck boards?

Do not assume so. A suitable engineered substrate, movement strategy and waterproofing system are required for the actual application.

Are concrete patios covered by this guide?

They are included to explain the options. This site’s primary focus is residential deck replacement and upgrades.
