A precise, contemporary surface

Aluminum decking: plank systems & dry-below options

Aluminum plank decking creates a different surface character from wood and wood-look products. Some systems are designed around interlocking drainage details; others are not. Evaluate the complete assembly rather than assuming all metal decks work the same way.

01

Planks are not the same as framing

Aluminum deck boards form the walking surface. Aluminum or steel structural framing is a separate decision. Ask the quote to identify both components and all compatible fasteners, trims and connection details.

02

Water management is system-specific

If a dry space below is important, request documentation for that exact system, including joints, slope, perimeter details and drains. Do not infer a waterproof roof from an interlocking board profile alone.

03

Compare the experience as well as the specification

Ask to see and touch a full sample. Consider finish, texture, noise, sun exposure and repair access. Confirm current local supply, a suitable installer and the requirements for cleaning and avoiding damage to the finish.

Questions worth asking

Does aluminum decking always make the space below waterproof?

No. That depends on a complete documented assembly and its installation.

Can a metal deck still have wood framing?

Potentially. The complete combination must meet the product requirements and applicable design requirements.
